A couple thoughts, as I await the magical witching hour of the NCAA basketball tournament…
I think I echo a great deal of White Sox fans when I say that Darin Erstad cannot be an everyday outfielder. However, I believe that Erstad is extremely well-suited to fill the role that Rob Mackowiak played last year. Defensively, Brian Anderson is the perfect choice for center field – and now that he has a year of experience under his belt, the errors he made because of over-hustling last year will now simply be routine outs. Should his bat falter, however, Erstad will make a great platoon player to complement Anderson’s glove. And should Scott Podsednik struggle out of the gate as well, Erstad can pick it up for either guy.
Depending on the asking price, too, I would not be averse to seeing the White Sox make a move to re-acquire Aaron Rowand. From what I understand, though, the Phillies would ask for either MacDougal or Thornton and I’m almost 100% sure that Kenny Williams would turn down any deal that involved either of those pitchers. Other scenarios, however, have the Sox dealing either Joe Crede or Josh Fields and other prospects for Rowand, and that might end up being an acceptable trade.
The only issue that rises out of that is a possible logjam of outfielders, but considering the talent present on the roster, that’s quite a happy problem to have.
Beware the Ides of March… 🙂
